When PRX’s Emily Corwin contacted me about featuring Philly Youth Radio’s Cristel Martinez on the alt.NPR podcast YouthCast, I was more than a little psyched. OK, that’s a bit of an understatement.
Cristel has quite a story – she left her family and moved to Philly from the Dominican Republic a few years ago, just to follow her dream of becoming a music producer. But she arrived only to find a school environment full of hateful words, drug use, violence, and checked-out teachers.
The podcast episode features Cristel’s essay “Soundtrack to School Violence” and an interview with the producer, exploring her challenges in creating the piece.
